Beauford's Adoption Story

I have never been much of a dog person per se. I always had dogs growing up, but they were always outside dogs and not really my dogs. I never had to worry whether they ate or bathed or got their shots – my parents took care of that. So, I never really got too attached to a pet and never really understood when other people did.

Since day one of our marriage, Adam has wanted a dog. We have gone back and forth, but the timing was just never right. We were always going from, “Let’s get a dog!” to “We are NOT ready for a dog!”

One random day in November, I started looking around on petfinder.com, because the hubby and I were currently in the “let’s get a dog!” phase. There he was - the cutest, sweetest looking tan and white basset hound I had ever seen named Beauford.

As soon as I got home from work that day, I showed Adam Beauford’s profile. He immediately wanted to fill out an application for adoption, because just like me, he had a gut feeling that this was our dog. Come to find out, Beauford was an 11-month-old pure bred basset hound who had been given up for adoption from a basset hound breeder in Alabama for unknown reasons. Our local SPCA had just received him and had just posted Beauford online. We were the very first ones to inquire about him.

After meeting Beauford at his foster family’s home, we knew that he was the missing piece to our puzzle. He has been nothing but a joy and has added so much to our lives. I never envisioned myself getting so attached, but he is more than a pet; Beauford is a member of our family. I can’t image why anyone would have wanted to get rid of Beauford, but God had a plan. Not only did Beauford need us, but we needed him too. He has enriched our life by tenfold, and I can’t image life without him.

In January 2011, Beauford was named Nashville Predators (NHL)/Pedigree’s Dog of the Month. He was featured on the Predators’ dasherboard for the whole month of January in 2011.

Fun Facts about Beauford:

Name: Beauford (pronounced Buford) Zackery Sumrall

Nicknames: Beauf, Mr. Beauf, Mister Mister, Beaufie, Sugar Bear

Birthday: November 21, 2009

Likes: Dog parks, treats and LOTS of attention

Pet-Peeves: He does not like for Adam or me to be on the computer for too long (two minutes, max!) when the other person is not home. Beauford will snort and scratch his back paws on the carpet (much like a bull) until you give him some attention. That boy needs your full attention!

Favorite Toy: He LOVES toys! Beauford’s not at all bias. He will work on a toy until you take it away or he destroys it (which ever comes first).

Favorite Food: Anything! He has been known to steal a turkey sandwich right off the plate. Beauford is doing better at not begging so much, but he always has to try at least once (hey, you never know if this will be the time it works). He is not allowed to eat “people” food, but he is our little vacuum for any food/crumbs that hit the floor.

Best Trick: He'll sit for a treat or for you to throw a toy.

Other fun notes: Beauford never meets a stranger and wants to say “hi” to everyone. He loves playing with other dogs (whether they want to or not!). Beauford has a mind of his own and will only do what he wants to do. He is a very sweet, low key little fella.

 We love him!

  4. Beauford, I think Hannah and I met you at the dog park in the spring. I happened to stumble across your mommy's blog. We need to stay in touch. Check out my blog during the two minutes you let your parents on the computer sometime. Paw at you soon.

  5. I have a bassett, too! I found your blog from Show Us Your Life. I might just become the biggest stage mom ever if our dog became a "model" - haaaa! Mr. B is so cute! I love that he's so friendly. Chloe, our bassett, is SOOO shy and scared of her shadow!
