Girls On The Run 5K

Saturday, I had the privilege to be a running buddy at the Girls On The Run 5K.

Girls On The Run is a 12-week after school programs for 3rd - 8th grade girls. The program uses the power of running to help prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Mid program, the girls run a practice 5K and end with the big Girls On The Run 5K. Each girl is assigned a "running buddy" to run the practice 5K and 5K with to help her stay on pace and meet her goal.

Saturday was the big end of the season 5K that all the girls run along with their running buddies.  The race is also open to the public with profits benefiting the organization.  There were at least 500 participants, including the girls and their buddies.

I was assigned to a 5th grader named Allison.  This was her very first 5K, and she was awesome!  During our practice 5K together, she finished in 37 minutes, which was A-MAZ-ING since before then, she had only ran one mile and that was actually a run/walk mile.

Allison's goal on Saturday was to simply beat her practice 5K time of 37 minutes.

(Yes, I'm wearing a crazy head camera videoing the whole race for Adam's work.)

We had some rough points during the race, but I was DETERMINED that she was going to reach her goal.  When she wanted to walk, I told her we had to speed walk and would say things like, "Ok, we can walk to that tree, but then we have to run."  She held in like a trooper!  She never complained, but I could tell she was hurting.  With a little over a quarter of a mile left, I told her, "Ok, you only have three minutes left if you want to meet your goal!"

I really didn't think she had anything left to give, because she was really struggling the last mile, but all of the sudden, Allison started SPRINTING.  Yes, sprinting, not running!  I was trying my hardest to just keep up with her; she was movin'!

See the clock; she made it!  Her officially time was 36:07!  Met her goal with 53 seconds to spare!

(Yes, the guy behind us is a beast!  Ignore him!)  So proud of Allison; that girl is a trooper!

Such a fun event and an awesome organization!  Looking forward to many, many more Girls On The Run 5Ks!
